August is Membership and New Club Development Month, making it the perfect time to look closely at how we welcome people into Rotary, keep them engaged and help our clubs thrive.
District leaders recently returned from the Big West Regional Leadership Workshop in Reno inspired by a powerful message: Rotary grows stronger when Membership, Public Image and The Rotary Foundation work together.
The workshop brought leaders from throughout Zones 26 and 27 together to collaborate, exchange ideas and develop intentional strategies to strengthen Rotary across the West. As Rotary International Director Wyn Spiller reminded us, we have an opportunity to envision what we can accomplish together and help our clubs become, in the words of Rotary International President Yinka Babalola, “better than their best.”
One of the most valuable sessions joined Membership, Public Image and Foundation leaders for a candid discussion about the challenges facing Rotary clubs. We explored declining membership, decreasing engagement and limited participation in The Rotary Foundation’s Annual Fund.
These issues are not separate puzzle pieces scattered across the table. They are closely connected indicators of overall club health.
Healthy clubs give members meaningful opportunities to serve. They communicate their impact clearly. They welcome new ideas, develop leaders and help members understand how contributions to The Rotary Foundation expand the reach of their service.
That is where public image becomes an essential part of membership development.
When we share authentic stories about people whose lives have been changed, volunteers who have discovered purpose and communities strengthened through Rotary service, we help prospective members see themselves as part of that story.
A photograph of Rotarians presenting a check is helpful. A photograph of the actual project is even better. A story explaining why the project mattered, who benefited and what Rotary members experienced while making it happen is far more powerful.
Our stories show people that Rotary is not simply another meeting on the calendar. It is a place to build friendships, use professional talents, develop leadership skills and create lasting impact.

Share Your Best Membership Ideas
Every club has something another club can learn from.
Perhaps your club has hosted a successful prospective-member event, introduced a corporate membership program, created a new-member orientation, strengthened its mentorship process or found an effective way to engage younger professionals.
Maybe you improved your meetings, launched a satellite club, invited community partners to participate in a project or discovered that personal invitations work better than broad recruitment campaigns.
During Membership Month, I invite every District 5470 club to share its best membership recruitment or engagement idea.
Tell us:
- What did your club try?
- Why did you try it?
- What worked?
- What would you do differently?
- Could another club easily adapt the idea?
We will share selected ideas through the district newsletter, website and social media so clubs throughout District 5470 can learn from one another. Your idea does not need to be elaborate or revolutionary. Sometimes the simplest change, a warmer welcome, a thoughtful follow-up or a meaningful invitation to serve, makes the greatest difference. Please submit via Google Forms here or email information and photos to the Public Image Team: pi.rotary.5470@gmail.com.
The Big West workshop reinforced that no single committee can build a vibrant Rotary club alone. Membership brings people through the door. Public image helps them understand why Rotary matters. The Rotary Foundation turns their generosity and service into sustainable change.
Together, these areas form a powerful flywheel that helps clubs grow, engage members and increase their impact.
Let’s use Membership Month to share what works, learn from one another and show our communities that Rotary is a place where people connect, serve and make good things happen.
What can we envision and accomplish together? The possibilities are waiting for us.
